The short answer

How do you finance an Isuzu or UD vehicle in Kenya?

Start by selecting the correct vehicle and body for the work, obtain a detailed supplier quotation, choose a regulated lender or an official manufacturer-linked finance channel, and compare offers using the total amount repayable rather than deposit or monthly instalment alone.

Approval normally depends on the applicant's credit profile, deposit, bank or M-Pesa cash-flow history, business age, financial statements, existing debt and proof that the vehicle can generate or support enough income. A lender may finance one pickup, bus or truck—or an entire fleet—but every offer remains subject to credit approval and asset acceptance.

Best first step: prepare the vehicle, body and insurance requirement as one finance-ready specification. A low monthly payment cannot rescue a truck that is too small for the load, too large for the route or fitted with the wrong body.

Main financing options for commercial vehicles

Asset finance / instalment loan

The vehicle secures the facility while you repay principal, interest and applicable charges over an agreed term. It is widely used for trucks, pickups and buses.

Hire purchase

You make a deposit and instalments while the financier retains legal interest in the asset. Ownership arrangements after final payment depend on the contract.

Finance lease

A lease can preserve working capital and structure payments around asset use. Confirm end-of-term purchase, sale, return and residual-value conditions in writing.

Maintenance lease

Vehicle use and agreed maintenance services may be packaged into regular payments, improving cost predictability for uptime-focused fleets.

SACCO or cooperative finance

Members may access loans based on savings, guarantees and SACCO rules. Compare the full cost, security requirements and repayment period with bank asset finance.

Cash plus trade-in

A trade-in can reduce the amount borrowed. Compare the net vehicle cost and trade-in valuation instead of focusing only on the allowance offered.

Buying and leasing solve different cash-flow needs. Ownership, tax and accounting treatment should be confirmed with your accountant and the finance provider.

Current Isuzu finance offers: read “up to” carefully

As checked on 23 July 2026, Isuzu East Africa's latest-offers page advertises commercial-vehicle financing of up to 95%, repayment periods of up to 72 months, an indicated 1–1.5% appraisal fee and a repayment holiday of up to 60 days under its Tu-Cooperate offers.

Those are maximum or promotional parameters—not a promise that every applicant will receive the highest financing percentage, longest term or grace period. The approved structure can vary with the model, body, borrower risk, business performance, deposit and campaign validity. Ask for a dated offer letter stating all conditions.

A repayment holiday is not free finance. Ask whether interest accrues during the holiday and how it changes later instalments or the total repayable amount.

Financing a UD Croner or Quester

UD Trucks Kenya says its financial-services support can be tailored for a single unit or an entire fleet, new or used. The official options include instalment loans, finance leases and maintenance leases, with finance, insurance and maintenance capable of being structured around the customer's business needs.

For a medium- or heavy-duty truck, the lender will usually examine more than the purchase price. Expect questions about the application—long haul, construction, distribution or waste—plus trailers or bodies, monthly kilometres, contracts, expected revenue, maintenance planning and insurance.

Request the latest partner-finance terms through UD Financial Services Kenya or ask Dr. Isuzu to prepare the appropriate truck quotation.

How to compare two finance quotations properly

Put every offer into the same table and compare these items:

  • Cash price and amount financed: confirm whether the body, accessories, registration and taxes are included.
  • Deposit or equity contribution: a lower deposit preserves cash but normally increases the financed balance and total interest.
  • Interest basis: ask whether the quoted rate is fixed or variable and whether it is calculated on a reducing balance or another basis.
  • Annual Percentage Rate and Total Cost of Credit: these make interest, lender charges and relevant third-party costs easier to compare.
  • All fees: appraisal, processing, legal, valuation, tracking, security registration, excise duty and any monthly administration charges.
  • Insurance: identify the premium, excess, financed amount, renewal responsibility and whether credit-life or loss-of-use cover applies.
  • Term and repayment pattern: monthly, quarterly, termly or seasonal structures must match actual cash generation.
  • Balloon or residual payment: a smaller monthly instalment may leave a substantial final payment.
  • Early settlement and default terms: understand penalties, repossession rights, arrears charges and how partial prepayments are handled.

The Kenya Bankers Association and Central Bank of Kenya cost-of-credit initiative advises borrowers to request both a Total Cost of Credit breakdown and a loan repayment schedule. Do this before comparing lenders or signing.

Indicative commercial-vehicle repayment estimator

Use this calculator to test different deposits, rates and terms. It assumes equal monthly instalments on a reducing balance and is only a planning estimate.

Estimate your repayment

Change the figures to match a lender's written quotation.

Deposit amount KES 0
Estimated amount financed KES 0
Estimated monthly repayment KES 0
Estimated all-in outlay KES 0

This estimate excludes changing insurance premiums, taxes, some third-party costs, grace-period interest, balloon payments and variable-rate changes. It is not a loan offer or financial advice. Use the lender's Total Cost of Credit disclosure and repayment schedule for your decision.

Documents commonly required for vehicle finance

Requirements vary by lender and applicant type, but preparing the following early can shorten the process:

  • National ID or passport and KRA PIN for the applicant, directors or guarantors.
  • Certificate of registration/incorporation, CR12 or equivalent ownership records, licences and company KRA PIN.
  • Detailed pro forma invoice for the chassis, body, accessories and applicable taxes.
  • Recent business and personal bank statements for the period requested by the lender.
  • Management accounts, audited financial statements or income evidence appropriate to the business.
  • Existing loan and asset-finance statements so the lender can assess total obligations.
  • Customer contracts, LPOs, route records, invoices or other evidence supporting expected vehicle revenue.
  • Proof of deposit source and documents for any offered security or guarantees.
  • Insurance quotation and any bodybuilder specification requested by the lender.

A lender may request additional information and perform credit-reference, valuation, fraud-prevention and legal checks with your consent.

Test affordability using business cash flow

Do not ask only, “Can this week's income pay the instalment?” A financed vehicle must survive slow months, scheduled service, tyre replacement, insurance renewal and unexpected downtime.

Monthly vehicle surplus = vehicle revenue − fuel − driver and crew − maintenance reserve − tyres − insurance reserve − permits/tolls − finance repayment.

Run a base case and a stress case. In the stress case, reduce revenue, increase fuel cost and allow downtime. If the vehicle cannot cover its repayment and operating costs without continuously draining unrelated business cash, change the deposit, term, vehicle specification or purchase timing.

Also budget working capital. Financing may put the truck on the road, but the first delivery can still require fuel, wages, loading costs and insurance excess before the customer pays you.

A sensible application process

Define the work

Record cargo or passenger needs, body type, heaviest load, route, daily distance, contract income and expected utilisation.

Select the correct vehicle

Match GVW, payload after body fitment, engine, drivetrain and application before asking the bank to finance it.

Obtain a detailed quotation

Separate chassis, body, options, taxes, registration, delivery and validity dates. Confirm what the financier accepts.

Prepare the credit file

Organise identity, registration, banking, accounts, contracts, existing debt and deposit evidence consistently.

Compare formal offers

Compare APR, Total Cost of Credit, repayment schedules, insurance, fees, security and early-settlement conditions.

Inspect before accepting delivery

Confirm model, body specification, documentation, insurance, warranty and any defects before acknowledging the completed asset.

Finance the vehicle that fits the revenue

Different income streams need different assets. Finance approval is not proof that the vehicle is right for the job.

Seven financing mistakes to avoid

  1. Choosing by deposit alone. A low deposit can hide a larger financed balance and higher total interest.
  2. Financing the wrong body. Body weight can reduce payload and therefore revenue.
  3. Ignoring insurance and fees. The interest rate is only one part of the Total Cost of Credit.
  4. Using average revenue as guaranteed revenue. Test low-season and downtime scenarios.
  5. Matching a long loan to a short contract. The repayment continues even if the customer contract ends.
  6. Assuming a grace period means no interest. Get the effect on the repayment schedule in writing.
  7. Paying before finance and body approval. Confirm quotation validity, lender acceptance and refund conditions first.

Frequently asked questions

How much deposit do I need to finance an Isuzu truck in Kenya?

The deposit depends on the lender, vehicle, borrower profile and active promotion. Some offers advertise high financing percentages, but approval and final equity contribution follow credit assessment. Request a dated formal offer.

Can a new business finance an Isuzu or UD truck?

Potentially, but a lender may require owner guarantees, contracts, a larger deposit, related business history or additional security because the business has a limited financial track record.

Can the truck body be included in vehicle finance?

It may be possible when the body is included in an approved supplier quotation and the lender accepts the complete asset specification. Confirm this before paying a bodybuilder deposit.

Is leasing better than buying?

Leasing can preserve cash and simplify replacement or maintenance, while ownership can suit a business keeping the vehicle for many years. Compare cash flow, tax treatment, mileage, end-of-term conditions and total cost with professional advice.

Does Dr. Isuzu guarantee finance approval?

No. Dr. Isuzu can help identify the vehicle, prepare a detailed quotation and guide the application, but only the lender can approve credit and issue binding terms.
